digg has accepted reddit's challenge to a fundraising competition for Haiti!
It's about time we used the competitiveness between our communities for some good. It's not about what frontpage has links first, or the best discussions, it's about helping DirectRelief do as much good in Haiti as possible. Thanks to all of you who've continued to push for this, the reddit community shows no signs of letting up!
Here's digg's fundraising page: http://dri.convio.net/site/TR?pg=fund&fr_id=1030&pxfid=1910
The community demanded we match the money spent on redditgifts, so we've upped the goal to $185,229.69
You asked for it, reddit. And it looks like we'll do it. Unbelievable!
Here's how it all started
reddit wanted to help. DirectRelief wanted the help. 100% of the donation is going to Haiti response programs -- no administrative BS or fundraising charged against your gift. It's all going to Haiti.

We've all been shocked and saddened by the earthquake that's hit Haiti and based on the trending reddit links since the quake hit, it's clear many of you are anxious to help. I got to talking with a redditor at DirectRelief, a non-profit specializing in just this kind of disaster recovery and sending 100% of donations to help Haiti - redditors needn't worry about any money siphoned off for administrative or fundraising costs.
And as we saw on the reddit frontpage today, sending anything but money is detrimental to the relief effort right now.
We've set an ambitious goal of US$31,415 because we know you're up to the challenge, reddit. There's $1,000 in the pot to get things started, but team reddit will personally match redditors for another $1,000.
UPDATE: Zoinks! We hit our original, delicious goal of $31,415 in just five hours (reddit, you're awesome, that is, truly awe-inspiring).
But then we realized e^(pi * i) is -1 and we don't want to be negative; alternatively, we'd rather say that we "e^(2pi * i)."
Everyone likes a winner* so let's raise $62,830 for Haiti!
ANOTHER UPDATE! Hot oatmeal! You did that in 12 hours!
Absolutely remarkable, reddit, you've *broken* $100,000 in donations for Haiti! Keep piling it on and subscribe to /r/Haiti to watch the results of your awesomeness.
And here's the best part, we'll be getting photo/video/text updates from the field on the /r/Haiti reddit so you can see just how your money is being used as well as keep up with their work in the days, weeks, and months to come. http://reddit.com/r/Haiti
Oh, and @kn0thing is challenging @kevinrose and @digg to beat @reddit at giving to @DirectRelief, because this whole rivalry is pretty silly, but we ought to use it for some good. In the process, he's giving $1 (up to 1,000) for every tweet at @kevinrose coaxing him into stirring up diggers to create their own donation page and out-give reddit. http://twitter.com/kn0thing/statuses/7805965419
*e^(2pi * i) = 1. Don't you wish you'd studied harder in Pre Calc?

We all are doing out parts to help, but finding extra funds to donate can be difficult in these trying economic times. Here is a no cost method for potentially raising more money for Haiti:

I'm a builder with extensive experience in disaster reconstruction in several countries. I can't seem to penetrate the USAID website to submit a bid. We feature rainwater catchment, dry compost toilets, and integrated solar power. Structural elements are recycled steel. We have engineered plans and takeoffs, and most labor is onsite, which is good for the Haitians (as opposed to expensive prefab). I can be reached at greenframe@aol.com; my name is Mike Roddy.

I wonder why it tkaes a catastrophe for people to give their attention to countries/cultures, etc.... that are living well below what we as US citizens consider poverty. The world needs to start thinking long and hard about the future and the mess we will leave for our children if we don't drastically change our bad habits now
